Autoimmunity

The term autoimmunity refers to a failure of the body’s immune system to recognize its own cells and tissues, like your joints or skin, as “self.” Instead, immune responses are launched against these cells and tissues as if they were foreign or invading bodies.

Nearly everyone has some form of autoimmunity, and it’s usually harmless. When it’s more severe, however, autoimmunity can cause a broad range of human illnesses, known collectively as autoimmune diseases.

Some autoimmune diseases target only one organ. Type 1 diabetes damages the pancreas. Other diseases, like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), affect the whole body.

Conventional medicine treats autoimmunity with powerful medicine that suppresses your immune system — and causes loads of side effects. Integrative medicine views autoimmunity as complex, recognizing that genetics, epigenetics, lifestyle factors, immune imbalances, and environmental toxins can all play a role in developing autoimmune disease. This model gives us many more treatment options and therefore, a greater chance of healing your body. Through advanced testing and a multifaceted, full-system approach, we work with you to get back on track for a full, vibrant life.
